Happy Birthday Baby New Year

While writing up a new article for Unruly PaperArts on mixing and matching patterned paper, I decided to create a little birthday card to 2013.

I am not sure if this card is vintage, grunge, shabby chic or just a bunch of papers I really liked together, but here it is.  My camera is being a bit finicky about color but most of this card is rich reds, and rusts with a fabulous touch of celery green and warm ecru.

This year I have resolved to not resolve anything. Last year, I really wanted to be better about using my vast collection of stamps and my hoarded supplies and scheduling time to stamp. I did do a lot better at the beginning of the year and then, as it always does, life happened. In April of 2012, my part-time mostly offsite job became a very much onsite position with lots more hours. In September, I completely resumed all my full-time duties at our family business. Stamping time was at a premium as I tried to juggle all my different bits and bobs of life, marriage, parenthood, house, job and my own business as well as I could.

In the end, I followed half of last year's resolutions and, until yesterday, had not cut a new 12x12 piece of patterned paper throughout 2012. I have dipped into my scrap basket so much that it now actually resembles a basket again. I can see sides and sometimes even the bottom. I did organize my small scraps of cardstock and actually used them quite a bit. They now occupy a small drawer rather than a huge file box.

My responsibilities for Rogue Redhead Designs and Unruly PaperArts did take up a lot of my sparse stamping and collage time so I did not get to play with my many, many (26 pizza boxes of wood-mounted, 13 binders of cling-mounted and 3 drawers of acrylic) stamps or boxes of collage elements as much as I would have liked. I only added one new stamp in 2012 to my collection that wasn't RRD ...but everyone knows I am a sucker for Penny Black's hedgehog so that can be excused as a minor slip in my Stamp Acquisition was Christmasy, what was I supposed to do?  I have trimmed down my stamp collections though, getting rid of all my impulse buys.

This year, my goal is quite simple - keep stamping!

I want to keep learning, experimenting and being inspired by all the fabulous artists that I know and admire!

Wishing everyone a fabulous New Year!

Just a Note

Tis the season to get in touch with friends who are spread far and wide. What better way to start up a new conversation than with a handmade card.  Whether I am thanking someone for the perfect present or just wishing them tons of New Year cheer, a "Just a note" card is my favorite way to go.

This year, I made a lot of different "thinking of you" and "just a note" cards as I decided in a wild move against tradition to skip the holiday cards this year.  I am taking my time over the quiet days between the end of the holiday and the beginning moments of 2013 to write letters to my friends and family flung far and wide rather than just dashing off a quick note on the bottom of a Christmas card.

Here's one of the cards I made:

For this square card, I colored this stamp with markers and stamped it onto water color paper for a soft and different look.

Stamp: Blush (Penny Black) and sentiment (SavvyStamps)

I am entering this card into the following fantastic challenges:

Tuesday Alchemy - Anything Goes

Use It Tuesday - Look Ahead to 2013  (hoarded supplies are much neglected stamp and sentiment, Stampin' Up paper I've had for at least 4 years and my last two pieces of Old Olive cardstock which I was saving for a rainy day; purpose of card is to catch up with friends/family with hand-made cards in 2013).

The Pink Elephant Challenge - Anything Goes

Off to make some more!

Merry Christmas with some Paper Pines

Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday and fabulous New Year! Hope your days are filled with love, friendship and fantastic fun!

For this card, I did a simple paper piecing technique with a whole lot of scraps! The trees are from RRD's Candy Kisses set.

Hope everyone finds some great crafty goodness under the tree this year!

Multi Midge

"Midge" , a new Rogue Redhead Designs image, made her debit in the January 2013 issue of Craft Stamper magazine. I was so excited to have 3 of my designs included in this issue of Craft Stamper. Here is one of the designs I made with Midge. As you can see, I kept it dead simple but I think it still has some panache!

Midge will make an appearance on one of RRD's 2013 releases.  Look for here in the New Year.

I am entering this card into the following challenges:

Design Divas - Anything Goes

Through the Craft Room Door - Anything Goes

Lady Anne's Challenges - Anything Goes

Hope you are enjoying some free time for your creative endeavors over the holiday break!

Good Friends and Published in Craft Stamper

I am delighted to say that a few of my cards graced the pages of Craft Stamper in their January 2013 issue! So excited!

Those who get the free cover stamp with their subscription to Craft Stamper have a new Milliner Misses image - Midge! She'll be making an appearance, in a larger format, on RRD's upcoming Odds and Sods stamp plate releasing in 2013.

Stamps: Midge (exclusinve on Craft Stamper) and sentiment from Milliner Misses mini (Rogue Redhead Designs)

I had a ton of fun putting this card together!  The pleated ribbon border was a bit tricky until I realized that it would be a breeze with some double-sided tape - duh.

Hope you are having lots of fun times with friends over the holiday season!

Cooking Up Some Art

For December, the Unruly Facebook group is doing baking/cooking items as their "Altered Item of the Month"!

I choose to FINALLY (had this thing forever) alter this cool vintage 50s pie plate.  I painted it with gold Lumiere paint and sprinkled on some gold flakes (JudiKins) for some extra sparkle.

For the center piece, I wanted to showcase this lovely vintage Christmas postcard.  I picked out some subtle paper to go with the colors - don't you love green and gold?  I added some music paper and a little more gold paint here and there to finish off the look.

Here's a closer look at that vintage postcard:

There's still time to go arty on your  bakeware!  We're showing off our altered items until the end of the month! The some Unruly submissions will be featured in the January issue of Unruly PaperArts!

Shaping Up Blues

It's the end of the year and I am contemplating my stamping sins of the past year. While I started with the idea of using up as many scraps as possible this year and getting tons of stamping done, life and a slow-go mojo got in the way. I did conquer my fear of CAS cards which was a plus as they are such a great way to use up those pesky scraps!

Here is one of the ideas from my article on Unruly PaperArts - Scraptastic Uses for Your Paper Bits.

I loved this bits of blue too much to throw them out but they were too small for most of my design ideas.  I decided to showcase them as small panels and use the excess of this double-sided paper to paper piece this pretty miss.

What do you think?  Hit or Miss?

Feeling Scrappy

If your scrap basket is like mine, it is constantly overflowing. In this month's issue of Unruly PaperArts, I took a look at some ways to lighten your scrap load with some easy cards.

I am often left with scraps that are long enough but not quite wide enough for a full card panel. Why not showcase the amazing pattern and make it a feature? This simple card could definitely send me on a card making frenzy to use up all those gorgeous and busy designer papers that I have lying around.

Stamp: sentiment from Snow Hugs (Rogue Redhead Designs)

I also have a lot of very small scraps and that's where my punch comes in handy. Here's another card with only a sentiment but lots of visual interest. You can see how I made it over at UPA.

Stamp: sentiment from Floriculture (Rogue Redhead Designs)

Well, off to rummage some more in my scrap basket!

Mitten Mania

I always love repetition in design. I find it so fun. Here's a quick one-layer card I did with a Christmasy feel.  The finished card was perfect for the One-Layer Winter Holiday Card challenge at RRD!

I stamped the mittens from my RRD Candy Kisses set in a row and then used copic markers to add Christmasy colors.  I added a sentiment from a companion set, Snow Hugs, to finish off this simple card.

Stamps: mittens from Candy Kisses, sentiment from Snow Hugs (Rogue Redhead Designs)
I have entered this card in the following challenges:

Less is More - One Layer In a Row

Lollipop Crafts - Happy Holidays

Paper Playtime - Christmas Colors

Of course, this is not the first time I have used this layout as you know!  Here's a peak at my past cards going back to 2009!

Time to find those mittens and get out in the great outside!

Icicle Infatuation

Love blooms even in the coldest weather. I was having fun with my Snow Hugs set and some post-its! It was perfect for the One-Layer Winter Holiday Card Rebel Challenge on RRD!

I first stamped this loving couple onto a white card base and then I created a mask by stamping the image again on a large post-it. After carefully cutting out the figures, I added the mask to the card and then used post-its to create square (or mostly square) sections into which I could sponge cool blue ink. I loved the effect!

I used a water brush to pick up some more inky color and paint in some of the details on the two figures.  I wanted to keep it simple so I just picked out a few details.

I am also entering this card into the following challenges:

Papertake Weekly Challenge - Snow White

Try It On Tuesday - Let's Get Inky

Without Words Challenge Blog - Monochrome Christmas

Hope the love of your life warms your heart in this cool weather!

Mardi Gras in the Middle

For Clean and Simple cards, the "In the Middle" technique, shown in the  Technique Junkies newsletter, holds the possibility of so many variations.  This time I went bright and bold with it.  The new Rebel Challenge on Rogue Redhead Designs is to create a Winter Holiday Card in just One-Layer!

I chose Mardi Gras for my first Winter Holiday to showcase and used my RRD Carnival Dreams stamps to create the scene.

I stamped my couple and surrounded them with stars for above the sentiment.  For below the sentiment, I used masking to create a trio of jesters hats.  I used the purple, green and gold of Mardi Gras for my main color scheme.

I am also entering this card into the following challenges:

Jellypark Challenges - Stars are Brightly Shining

Addicted to Stamps and More! - Make Your Mark

Loves Rubber Stamps - Anything Goes

Hope you have a day bursting with color and love!

Cosmos Buds Go Scraptastic

This card was born from scrap bits left over in my scrap basket.  I love this happy yellow color and couldn't resist saving all my bits from various projects.  That said, I also couldn't figure out what to do with the little bits I had saved until I hit on this one idea.  I think it turned out quite well.

I stamped my cosmos blossom from my Floriculture set (Rogue Redhead Designs) onto these different patterned papers with Tuxedo Black Memento ink.  I framed the strips with a black panel and mounted everything onto a soft yellow card base.

Stamp: Cosmos blossom from Floriculture (Rogue Redhead Designs)
I have entered this card into the following challenges:

Lady Anne's Challenges - Anything Goes

Crafting for All Seasons - Use Flowers (these are cosmos buds)

Penny's Paper Crafty - Anything Goes

Paging Winter

It's a busy time of year so I went EXTRA simple for this month's Simple Set Saturday over at Rogue Redhead Designs.

I started with some vintage papers (a gift from my friend Laura) and over-stamped my Snow Hugs images onto the paper. A little ripping and distress ink later and I had a full set of cards - no fuss no muss! Okay, a little muss...I'm not that neat with distress ink :)

I am entering this card into the following challenges:

Chocolate, Coffee and Cards - Clean and Simple

Guylou's Inimitability - Twisted Christmas (non-traditional colors)

Charizma Cards - Christmas with a Twist (no red, green or gold)

To see the other cards I made with the same idea over at the RRD blog!

Comforts of Home

It's holiday time again or at least that's what the music and decorations at the mall seem to be screaming. In the midst of all that loud, brash and over-the-top Christmas chaos, I wanted a breath of old-fashioned holiday spirit - simple delights and time spent with family. I thought of this sweet pair, an image I received from a dear friend.

I went very colorful with the actual image but tried to keep my Copic coloring fairly mellow.

Stamp: HAnglar & stAnglar
I am entering this card into the following charming challenges:

Shopping Our Stash - Odds and Ends / Waiting to Be Used
This image from a swap has been in my "to be colored" box for ages and these Stampin' Up papers have been sitting in my drawer for several years.  Happy to have them all used!
ABC Challenge - Anything Goes

May the comforts of home be paramount for you this week!

Live the Life

This is the second card I made with my distress ink backgrounds. This time I went ultra simple. Showcasing the beautiful Da Vinci woman was my main focus and this evocative sentiment seemed to add a fabulous balance to the card.

Again, I kept the color palette to a minimum of teal and black.  An ultra-simple mat with opposing rounded corners added a little zing.

Stamps: Da Vinci Woman (Stamp Francisco) and sentiment (Stampers Anonymous)
I have entered this card in the following challenges:

Sunday Stamper - Vintage (image is Da Vinci - vintage)

That Craft Place - No Squares Allowed

Wishing you a day of stamping and serious fun!

Teal Streaked Passion

Sometimes one just has to play around. This card is the result of just making it up as I went along. I started with some backgrounds I had made a long long time ago by dragging glossy card stock through distress ink that had been stamped on a craft sheet and spritzed with water.

From there, I decided to focus on this beautiful image originally by Leonardo Da Vinci, translated into rubber by Stamp Francisco. She has such a classic powerful look despite her elegance and grace that I wanted to pair her with an inspirational statement.  I used some extra background glossy paper to stamp the sentiment (River City Rubber Works).

While the background paper was already subtly patterned teal paper, I added to it by stamping "passion" (Impression Obsession) repeatedly over the whole panel.

I ended up making two cards using this face and a similar theme.

I am entering this card into the following challenges:

Ladybug Crafts - Monochrome

Natalie and Amy's Challenge - Favorite Color Combo (teal and black)

Hope you find passion, poise and poetry in your day!

Bunny Christmas

Figured it was about time to start on my Christmas cards! These bunnies are too cute! I dressed them and their tea cup up with some red and green and voila! Christmas card!

The bunnies are from My Favorite Things and the sentiment is Rogue Redhead from the Candy Kisses plate.

I am entering this card into the following challenges:

Crafty Bloggers - Christmas Anything Goes

Clear It Out Challenge - Ugly Sweater - the base panel of designer paper was purchased in a pack for me as a gift when I first started stamping, almost 8 years ago!  It's supposed to be grass blades.....

Through the Craftroom Door - Anything Goes

Hope your day is filled with playfulness and a nice cup of tea!

Post Script

I have been very negligent in posting the fabulous things that have been coming in the mail for me in the past month!  I have been beyond busy at work but hopefully it will start to ease up as we hit the home stretch of the year!

These are the beautiful Artist Trading Cards that I received in the Unruly Eerie ATC swap.  Thanks to Michele, Krisha and Helene!

Artwork by Michele, Krisha and Helene

I also got a lot of great hostess gifts along with my selection of ATCs!  Thanks everyone! You are all too sweet!  For those that played, yes I only have 3 and I should have 4 ATCs in the swap but the Roguette took a shine to my own creations and put them around the house as decorations.  One of them was especially well-hidden and as she asked if she could have it after we finally found it, I have a feeling there was a plan involved in its disappearance.  As I could only send out 3, I only took 3.

Here's a couple of the wonderful extras I got from the swap!

A tag from Helene:

I love all the great details in this many great touches!  Thanks so much, Helene!

A great card from Electra:

I adore the design of this card, but I think my fav part are the witches legs at the top!  Thanks a bunch, Electra!

I also was surprised and delighted to receive a RAK from Kathy R!  Isn't it fabulous?  Thanks tons, Kathy!

My mail carrier thinks I am nuts as I always do a little dance at the mailbox when I see art from friends mixed in with all the bills and catalogs.

Orange You Reading?

Every year at the holidays, I find myself wrapping up a ton of books as gifts for friends.  Almost all my friends are bibliofiles like me and cannot get enough of a good read.

This year, I wanted to add cards that went with the gift, so I dug out my Relish Reading stamps and came up with a simple design!  I wanted the colors light and bright but I am sure I could completely change the look by changing the color palette.

Stamps: Marie and sentiment from Relish Reading (Rogue Redhead Designs)I am entering this card into the following challenges:

Challenges 4 Everybody - Anything Goes

Robyn's Fetish - Make It Vintage (definitely a vintage image)

Simply Create Too - Use Your Stash -  the designer paper and most of the cardstock was out of my stash of scraps and I've had those brads hanging around for a donkey's age :)

Hope you have a cozy day curled up with a book and a cup of cocoa before the holiday chaos arrives!

Published in Craft Stamper and a Giveaway

This month, I was delighted to be part of the Stamping Contrasts spread for the December issue of Craft Stamper.  I joined a wonderful group of designers - including Joanne Allison, Kim Costello and Jean Franks Beck -  all using Rogue Redhead's Snow Hugs plate!

I kept my deign pretty simple!  I colored the image using Copic markers!  The hearts in the sentiment block are paper pieced.

If you haven't checked out this cool magazine, now's the time!

Comment on this post for a chance to win the December Issue of Craft Stamper magazine.  I'll be drawing ONE lucky winner from all the comments left on this post by November 26, 2012.  I'll post the winner on November 27, 2012.

Labeling the Rainbow

Every once in awhile I pull out my label sheets to see what I can do.  This time I decided to take a nudge from the Do You Stack Up Rainbow Challenge and go with blocks of color with labels.

This is a simple square kraft card.  I colored the labels with distress ink and then stamped the lovers from Carnival Dreams with black ink.  I reassembled the three labels onto the base card and added a sentiment.  All finished!  I thought it made a cute note!

Stamps: lovers from Carnival Dreams, sentiment from Snow Hugs (Rogue Redhead Designs)

Don't forget both these sets are part of the Beautifully Dunn Bundle now on sale at Rogue Redhead Designs!

Dawn of Time

This card is for my husband on the occasion of our 16th wedding anniversary.  We are both history nuts so this beautiful tableau of gentleman from ancient Greece seemed to be appropriate.

It's hard to see in the full photo (my camera is being annoying) but these fab faces are stamped onto a piece of watercolor paper that was tea-dyed with actual tea and dusted with some coffee granules.  To finish off it was held over a candle just to get some fun singed bits here and there.

Onto this treated paper, I stamped this fantastic image from StampFrancisco with Rich Cocoa Memento.  I wanted to go a straight-forward non-cluttered layout as it was a masculine card so I took my cue from the Craft Your Passion Challenge where there was a call for Clean & Simple cards.  I then went looking for my design and settled on a delightful sketch from Freshly Made Sketches.

I liked the clean lines and the focus on the middle panel.  I also took inspiration for the background papers from Crazy Amigo's Stripes Challenge.

I used a little hardware and a bit of ribbon to finish the whole thing off.  As I have loved my beloved husband from the Dawn of Time, I hope this will properly convey that feeling :)

Have a fabulous day!

Playing Tag

In keeping with the Rogue Redhead Designs' Rebel Challenge - UnCard! - I am trying once again to create a tag.  I am truly tag-challenged but I thought I would just play around.  Here's what I got:

For this tag, I used images and a sentiment from my Floriculture plate and a flourish and tulip from my Nature Notes plate, stamped in Really Rust ink (Stampin Up) and Rich Cocoa (Memento) ink.  My base layers are scraps of designer paper.  I added a collage heart and the sentiment to finish it off.

Hope your day blossoms!

A Simple Thank You

Sometimes you need a simple thank you to highlight a generous gesture.  This one-layer thank you was quick to put together but I think has nice visual impact.

To put it together, I used the following Rogue Redhead Designs sets - Floriculture (the cosmos blossom), Bits and Pieces (the mottled square and the ragged rectangle) and Nature Notes (the sentiment).  I used Certainly Celery ink (Stampin' Up) for the shapes and Tuxedo Black Memento for the flower and sentiment.

I really love these simple geometric shapes from Bits and Pieces.  They come in so handy.

I've entered this card into the following challenges:

Amusing Challenges - Thank You

Scrappy Frogs - Give Thanks

Sentimental Sundays - Thanks / Thanksgiving

Have a fabulous day!! Thanks for visiting!

UnCard! New Rebel Challenge at RRD!

The new Rebel Challenge is up on the Rogue Redhead Designs blog and we are asking you to NOT make a card!  Basically, you have a long list of possible makes to create - ATC, Moo, Scrapling, coaster, hanging, canvas, home decor item, mixed media 3D piece - just not a card!

With a very tiring couple of weeks including a hurricane, Halloween, book clubs, outings with the family, an election, and a small snow storm, I really just wanted to keep life simple.  I decided to decorate a kraft journal with an image and sentiment from Nature Notes.

I particularly love this quote from an excellent poem by William Ernest Henley called Invictus.  It seemed quite appropriate for a new journal!

If you feel like getting away from the "card game" for a little, why not play in our current Rebel Challenge?  The randomly selected winner will receive a US$15.00 voucher to the RRD store!

If you haven't checked out the RRD Anniversary Mega Sale, there's still time to get in on the huge bargains available!
