Revisiting Art Exchanges

It's the 5th Wednesday of the month which happens only "once in a blue moon" so it's also time for Gingersnap Creations' Blue Moon Challenge. These challenges are often a little different than the usual fare at GC and often ask participants to look back at some cool stuff on the GC blog or venture out into the blogosphere.

This week, we are taking a look back at some of the fun past art exchange themes. I picked the Soar ATC theme.

I used some Invoke Art stamps to put together this ATC. I stamped and masked some tag images and added a Parisian map background. After stamping, I painted the image with ink to give it a soft look.

Why not check out what the other Gingers have put together and pick a theme of your own to revisit!

Magnetic Art

Right now Gingersnap Creations is having this fabulous Encouraging Words Magnet art exchange! Too cool, right? You create 4 unique magnets with some happy and deep thoughts and send them off and get 4 unique little masterpieces for your fridge or magnetic bulletin board!

I've long had my favorite ATC on my fridge in a little acrylic magnetic frame. It was the first one I ever ever made...really! It's still my favorite so I guess I didn't get any better.....anyway....

Yesterday, I posted a tutorial of the magnets I have been making for this art exchange. I only had to make 4 but I ended up making 9...ooops. Maybe I'll play twice.

Being a big fan of quotes and inspirational sayings, I made a couple that just focused on these ideas. Out came my two very favorite sentiments - Live the Life You've Imagined and Find Your Passion. I highlighted the IF in life with a bingo marker just for fun...then thought myself very clever. My fav of these two is the Find Your Passion because not only did I have a ton of fun making the background (smooshed distress ink with an overstamp of Rogue Redhead's sandy beach background) but I also found a couple of brilliant brads (okay, they've been in the drawer awhile) that said "Grow" and "Happy". Always good advice right?

Finally, I had to go back to my "go to" saying when I am creatively stuck. This one applies not only to my current artistic endeavors but also to my old profession and passion, writing! It reads "Silence Your Inner Critic". I have always found this advice helpful so thought I would remind myself again of this important idea with this mini clipboard.

Why not join in on the fun at GC at participate in this art exchange! You can also check out how I put all these pieces of magnetic art together and see the rest on my post on the GC blog.

Hanging Around with Primary Colors

This week's Color Challenge on Gingersnap Creations is to use Primary Colors. What fun! So I broke out the yellow, red and blue copic markers...and this happened!

This fun door hanger was a breeze to make and I got to use up some of my scraps too! I had a couple pieces that fit the bill - a red polka dot, some denim and this great yellow gingham. To top it off, I added a ruche frame around the main image. You can see the second image hanging off the bottom and the sentiment reads "May Your Day Be Filled With Sunshine"!

Here's a closer look at one of the The Stamping Boutique images I used:

So cute!!

The Roguette figured she'd get in on the fun and made this great card using Patch from The Stamping Boutique.

I think the Roguette is one of a kind! Isn't her card fun?

Join us and play with primary colors!

Rock and Roll Journal

School is around the corner and my daughter, the remarkable Roguette, has a new writing journal on her school supply list. Roguette does not like mass marketed products at all...she's her own woman... so I always have to create something unique for her.

This week, we are having a Tribute to Teens challenge on Gingersnap Creations and I got to use some fabulous digi images from The Stamping Boutique.

The Roguette does rock her electric guitar so I decided to give her a rock and roll journal but not one with a traditional color scheme. I used some great Light Blue Neenah for the images and then matted them with the flip side of this awesome blue and orange paper. To finish off, I added some funky red corners.

Rock On Journal
Stamps: using Max and Soulful Madyson (The Stamping Boutique)
Paper: Promenade / Fantasy (We R Memory Makers)
Cardstock: Light Blue Neenah (PaperTemptress); scraps of red (unknown)
Ink: various copics

Hope your day is rockin'! Check out the other great art by the Gingers!

Wet and Dry - Sand and Sea

This month's Rebel Challenge on Rogue Redhead Designs is "Surf and Turf - Wet and Dry Embossing". Fun, right? Gotta go rogue with this one!

I decided on a stair-step card so that I could create a beach scene with my Beach Babes stamps!

I stamped the sandy beach background on patterned paper with Tea Dye Distress Ink and clear embossed the result. It gave the "sand" some great depth and texture. I then dry embossed some sky and sea and added it to the back panel. After that, I stamped my figures and colored them with copic markers, attaching them to each "stair" of my card.

Oceans of Love
Stamps: boy, girl, boat and sentiment fr Beach Babes plate (Rogue Redhead Designs)
Paper: scrap of wood grain (unknown)
Cardstock: Brocade Blue, Caribbean Cool and Whisper White (Stampin Up)

Baby Wipe Techniques for Two

Today, Gingersnap Creations has a new Spicy Supply Challenge - Baby Wipes! How fun! I usually only use Baby Wipes to clean up messes but once I googled baby wipe techniques, I found a lot of fun things to do with them.

As this month is Joys of Childhood at GC, the Roguette, my 11-year-old daughter, is helping me out with my challenge pieces. The Stamping Boutique is sponsoring our challenges this month and they have a bunch of fun digis that we played with.

My first card incorporated a simple background using a baby wipe. I folded the baby wipe over itself a few times until I had a nice edge. I added three drops in ink refiller to the folded edge of baby wipe and wiped it across some white cardstock to create an informal plaid pattern. I loved the great textures from the PaperTemptress papers too! Isn't the felt too cool?

Stamp: Audrey's Playground Hopscotch (The Stamping Boutique)
Cardstock: Teal Felt Grandee, Neenah Solar White, Sky Blue Crepe (PaperTemptress)
Ink: Taken with Teal (Stampin Up); various copics
Other: baby wipe; corner rounder

For the second card, I added dots of ink to the baby wipe and then also dabbed some on a craft sheet and wiped it up with the same baby wipe. I let the whole thing dry and then used Tim Holtz flower dies as guides for cutting out flowers.

I love the softness of the blossom! I thought it would be a great embellishment for this little gardener.

Watering Can Girl
Stamp: Watering Girl (The Stamping Boutique)
Paper: Old Olive designer paper (Stampin Up)
Cardstock: Old Olive, Kiwi Kiss and Whisper White (Stampin Up)
Ink: Old Olive (Stampin Up); various copics
Other: baby wipe; oval cutter (Creative Memories)

Roguette just got back from camp where she tie-dyed camp shirts, so it was natural for her to pick a tie-dye technique. She twisted the baby wipe from the center and added rubber bands at irregular intervals similar to tie-dying. She then colored the spaces in between the rubber bands with markers. When unfolded, it became a tie-dye background.

Reading Girl
Stamp: Little Girl Fairy Once Upon a Time (The Stamping Boutique)
Cardstock: Real Red and Whisper White (Stampin Up)
Copics: B04. B05, B06, E00. E02. E07, E09. E34. E35, G21, R24, V04, V06, and 100
Markers: Real Red, Brilliant Blue, Elegant Eggplant and Certainly Celery (Stampin Up)
Other: baby wipe; rubber bands; oval cutter (Creative Memories)

We hope you play along with us at GC!

Surf and Turf with RRD's New Beach Babes Plate

When I think of August, I think of trips to the seashore. Now, I can make that trip all year round with the fabulous new Beach Babes plate from Rogue Redhead Designs!

As soon as they arrived I was busy stamping away. You can check out my Simple Set Saturday cards from last week on the RRD blog. I used kraft cardstock and basic coloring with colored pencils to create a set of seaside notes. Here's one of them:

Today, I have a bunch of new and different cards for you. The first is a paper pieced card. I got this incredible painted sea background from Paper House Productions and married it with a soft woodgrain piece of scrap for a landscape. Onto that I added the sailboat and waving girl from Beach Babes. I stamped them first onto the background, then onto white cardstock which I colored with copics.

Sail Away
Stamps: waving girl and sailboat from Beach Babes plate (Rogue Redhead Designs)
Paper: Painted Waves (Paper House Productions) and a scrap of woodgrain paper
Cardstock: Broquade Blue and Whisper White (Stampin Up)
Ink: Tuxedo Black (Memento); Antique Linen (Ranger Distress Ink)
Copics: B00, E00, E02, E07, E09, E11, E34, E35, RV11, RV13, RV14, V09

The next card is a simple grid using minimal colors. I used the Thoreau quote to finish off this card. It reads "My life is like a stroll along the beach, as near the ocean's edge as I can go".

Upon the Beach
Stamps: seabirds, small shell and sentiment from Beach Babes plate (Rogue Redhead Designs)
Cardstock: Garden Green, Very Vanilla and Kraft (Stampin Up)
Ink: Timber Brown (StazOn)
Other: various Derwent pencils

Of course, I could not resist using the sandy beach background and I ended up creating a beach scene with the shell, starfish and crab. An interesting background is a great way to highlight a quote so that's what I did, matting the quote in the same color as the card base to bring it all together.

Little Drops of Water
Stamps: sandy beach background, starfish, crab, shell and sentiment from Beach Babes plate (Rogue Redhead Designs)
Cardstock: Not Quite Navy and Kraft (Stampin Up)
Ink: Tea Dye and Vintage Photo (Ranger Distress Ink)

I also made a 4"x4" love note with a masculine feel using the sailboat, one of the borders and the "Oceans of Love" sentiment. I only added 3 colors to this vanilla square card, putting in some blue for the sea, some brown for the boat and a little subtle white for the sails.

Oceans of Love
Stamps: sailboat, border and sentiment from Beach Babes plate (Rogue Redhead Designs)
Paper: Very Vanilla (Stampin Up)
Ink: Jet Black (StazOn)
Other: various Derwent pencils

This fun set is available right now for the introductory price of $17.60US until September 6, 2011 when it will return to its regular price of $22.00US. Why not check out the RRD store?

Have an amazing day filled with summer breezes and happy memories!

We all Scream for Ice Cream

It's another new monthly theme at Gingersnap Creations! We'll be saluting the "Joys of Childhood" throughout August. Immediately my mind wandered back to those sunshine-filled days and the happiness that a simple ice cream could bring.

For this card, I used a did from The Stamping Boutique, the August Sponsor at Gingersnap Creations. I decided on bright colors - raspberries and blueberries were on my mind. I used PaperTemptress paper for its wonderful textures. The white is a felt finish, the red has an amazing texture of columns and then the blue ruche has a fabulous rough look. I used White Neenah for the actual image and it was fantastic to use with this great digi!
